Background of the Study
Peer group influence plays a significant role in shaping students’ academic behavior and performance in secondary schools. In Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, interactions among peers can either foster a conducive learning environment or contribute to distractions and negative academic outcomes (Ogun, 2023). Positive peer influences often promote collaborative learning, motivation, and a sense of belonging, thereby enhancing academic achievement (Adewumi, 2024). Conversely, negative peer pressure can lead to a decline in academic focus, absenteeism, and behavioral issues that adversely affect academic performance (Femi, 2025). Educational research emphasizes the importance of understanding peer dynamics to implement effective interventions that encourage supportive social interactions (Omolara, 2023). This study examines how peer group influence impacts academic performance in public secondary schools and seeks to identify strategies to harness positive peer dynamics while mitigating adverse effects (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, peer group dynamics significantly influence students’ academic performance. While positive interactions can enhance learning, negative peer pressure often leads to distractions and poor academic outcomes. This dichotomy creates challenges for educators who struggle to manage classroom behavior and maintain academic standards. The study aims to assess the extent of peer influence and determine ways to promote beneficial peer interactions while minimizing negative impacts (Adeyemi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the nature of peer group influence in public secondary schools.
To assess the impact of peer interactions on students’ academic performance.
To recommend strategies to promote positive peer influence and reduce negative effects.
Research Questions
What is the nature of peer group influence in the schools?
How do peer interactions affect academic performance?
What measures can mitigate negative peer pressure and enhance positive outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: Positive peer influence significantly improves academic performance.
H₂: Negative peer pressure has a significant negative impact on academic outcomes.
H₃: Interventions that promote positive peer interactions will enhance academic performance.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into how peer group dynamics affect academic performance. The findings will help educators, school counselors, and policymakers develop interventions to foster positive peer relationships and improve academic outcomes (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating peer group influence on academic performance in public secondary schools within Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State. It does not extend to private schools or other educational levels.
